7A17: The Rhythm Express - Day In May (ft Maiko) Season two for the Rhythm Express has seen an alteration in the front line with the addition of former girl group member - Sugar Jones, winners of the first season of Popstars in 2001 – Maiko Watson. Sugar Jones scored a #1 hit in Canada with “Day’s Like This” and has sold over 200,000 recordings.
With the relocation of supreme frontline vocalist/guitarist Selena Evangeline to London, England the call went out for a side-mate to compliment the steady presence of singers Michael Dunston and Ammoye Evans. Express drummer Everton “Pablo” Paul consulted with daughter Liza Paul, a gifted playwright /performing artist herself and Maiko’s name was put forward.
First season the Express explored the voluptuous catalogue of ska, reggae, funk, soul and New Orleans classics. Year two – it’s all about the originals - a band caught up writing their own material. Watson not only brings a voice packed with punch, clarity, big soul and immediacy - she’s also a gifted composer/writer. Evidence of that is the universally accepted – Soul Nation – lyric scripted by partner Michael Dunston – another member of the Express with a flair for writing on point, additionally expressed in his timely message in Black Lives Matter/The Ghetto – from 2015.
Recently, the rhythm section caught fire with the original, “Welcome to Funkastan,” a throw-back to the James Brown/Sly & Family Stone, Earth Wind & Fire era.
Singer Ammoye is riding the number #1 position on the reggae charts with “Sorry.” Jesse “Dubmatix” has been touring, a big presence in the European reggae circuit – both as a performer and producer.
For the Express, it’s all about the studio - that one new single each month.
Entering June we have a gem, “Day in May” a collective write between rhythm section and Watson. Maiko sculpted a gorgeous neo-soul melody and poignant lyrics over a rhythm/chord base. It all starts with the four-piece; an idea, a scrap of paper, a feel and then turned over to the front line. Day in May is both sensual and timely. It’s the seasons in big change; rebirth, empowerment, the flowering of new relationships - resolution!
Set free, Watson pushes the harmonic structure with vocals vertically stacked over free-flowing melodic motifs that weave, intersect and cross one another – having more to do with a finely crafted jazz solo than contrived radio fare. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t fit radio – on the contrary. With summer’s heat and long restful nights, tempos slow and melt into an aural/visual mix.
You can catch the Rhythm Express at the TD Jazz Festival June 25, 2016 – 12:30 p.m. Nathan Phillips Square. Joining the front line, singer/songwriter extraordinaire Julian Taylor!

Before becoming known to millions as Granny on The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), Irene Ryan was already an established vaudeville, radio and movie actress, though not as famous prior to her television stint. She accompanied Bob Hope on his famous military tours and she was known as "the gal who makes Bob Hope laugh." After being cast as Granny, she became famous overnight. When the Hillbillies ended, she co-starred in the Broadway musical 'Pippin' with Ben Vereen. Unfortunately, despite wonderful reviews from critics, Ryan took ill, was discovered to have an inoperable brain tumor and died soon after at the age of 70.
When she didn't have her Granny make-up on, she often went unrecognized on the streets.
Interred at Woodlawn Cemetery, Santa Monica, California, USA.
Since 1972, college thespians have competed annually for the prestigious Irene Ryan Scholarships (started by the Irene Ryan Foundation) at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
Her gravestone has the name Granny on it.
(1948-1950) Radio: Co-starred on NBC Radio's The Bob Hope Show.
Had no surviving relatives; with an estate worth over $1 million, she decided to start the Irene Ryan Foundation for theatre aspirants.
After the cancellation of The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), she was offered a starring role in a proposed TV series in which she would have played a character similar to that of Granny. Despite her interest in the idea of doing a new series, she decided to put the project on hold so that she could fulfill her dream of performing on Broadway. Ultimately, the proposed TV series never came into fruition, since her death in 1973 ended any chances of it being produced.
Commonly thought to have been born in El Paso, Texas, Irene was actually born in San Francisco, California. This is proven by personal records closer to the family, and census records.
Though she may never have known it, Irene was a 3rd cousin once removed to another actress, Mary Castle, (born Mary Ann Noblett). Both had common ancestral roots in the Noblet - Noblitt - Noblett family of Appalachian Georgia and North Carolina, reaching back to Quaker immigrants from Ireland to Pennsylvania, and from Ireland to a centuries-long line of French lords named Noblet and Noblette.
Toured with Bob Hope's USO troupe during World War II.
Irene owned and frequently stayed at a summer cottage on Clark Lake in Jackson County, Michigan.
A native of San Francisco, California, she was born on October 17, the same date of the 1989 San Francisco "World Series" Earthquake.
In a live interview, Max Baer Jr., who played Jethro on The Beverly Hillbillies (1962), stated that Irene "smoked like a chimney", which made other cast members fear for her health.

A special tribute to Northern Soul
I was looking for background on singer James Fountain from Atlanta,
Georgia who in 1976 had a minor hit with a track Cee Lo Green could have
scribbled, “Seven Day Lover,” and found nothing but empty space across
the Internet other than William Bell produced for his small independent
label, Cream.
Frustrated, I dug deeper until I discover Fountain made an impact in
Northern England when Northern Soul was rocking nightclubs during the
late sixties to mid 70s’- like Blackpool Mecca, Golden Torch, Catacombs,
Wigan Casino – up in the English Midlands, Scotland and Wales. Fountain
didn’t have a clue this was happening for him and was invited back in
2007 before he passed on.
“Seven Day Lover” became a collectors dream selling in the mid 70’s
for L500, a world record for a 7” single. The real buzz for me is how a
region locked in on a specific sound and built a fashion industry and
happening music scene around obscure artists such as Fountain.
Motown played a small part setting things in action but it was all
about one-shot artists and that one-time sound. Most artists had name
changes to suit the label masters and most came from small regional
operations such as Ric-Tic and Golden World out of Detroit, Mirwood in
Los Angeles, Shout and Okeh in New York and Chicago. The beauty in this –
you can still find the person in the music as if they have never exited
the planet.
With this in mind, the Rhythm Express couldn’t resist sinking their
teeth into this rarely heard gem of a song. The melody required some of
that soul testimonial Southern Baptist hard edge “shout and strut.” With
singer Michael Dunston close by and a native of North Carolina and a
big voice in the Express collective, this came naturally. Michael was
brought up on Wilson Pickett, Otis and Sam & Dave.

MEMPHIS TN (IFS) -- By the end of the 1960's, a lost art of the WWII pin-up girl was all but over. Most of the great pictures we have of these beautiful women are in Black & White. These images once considered "taboo" and just pornography is up for the high dollar price for original copies of these photos. After the Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, and everyone one else in the picture with a porno video, this ledge is considered the bottom of the barrow for collectors. However, "soft porn pin-up girls" is what the market is demanding right now. Single lens reflex action with a good eye and a fast finger have given these ladies of a long ago and bye gone era just that -- memories of these women fixed in time is priceless for collectors.
EBay.com's bins are overloaded with "soft porno" memories from WWII. But whose pictures dominate the listing and the sample sites. . . Janey Reynolds. You will pay a pretty penny for these reprints from the original negatives and slides.
In the early 1950's the famed "Pin-Up Models" from WWII
carried over into the new era of photography. The boys of the war only got the "clean" image photos that you could send home to mother. But now, the estates of many of these actresses, i.e., Hedy Lamarr's full color photos of her in the nude in various positions, is a little to much to believe, as this girl invented the US Navy's torpedo.
Not much is known about Ms. Janey Reynolds from Canada. She has changed her name as many times as some countries. Ms. Reynolds photographs have appeared in over 1,000 magazines all over the world. She is considered the most photographed woman in the world.
Let's not just point fingers at the "bad" girls, as one must exclude Ms. Lamarr's full nude from the other girls who just wanted to get their pictue taken, and exclude the one girl that is that most photographed woman in the world at that time was Miss Janey Reynolds.
The pictures of these
glorious females in all their abundant beauty and form is all that is
left of these media industry pioneers. There are very few stories of
these ladies, especially Miss Janey Reynolds of Canada.
The color film and the new cameras of the day were made for each other. The topless form of photography with female models was known as "soft porn".
Ms. Reynolds, by far was the most photographed pin-up girl ever.
