LOVE IN KATOOMBA | John McCall | John McCall was a talented New Zealand vocalist whose musical journey took him from local stages to the world’s most famous country music platform — the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. After winning a national singing competition in New Zealand, John’s prize was a trip to Nashville to perform on that legendary stage, an experience that marked the start of an exciting chapter in his career. | | During a performance at a local venue, renowned steel guitarist Kenny Kitching was so impressed by John’s voice that he phoned Lorna Barry, wife of respected country musician Noel Balfour, and invited her to come and hear him sing. Lorna was equally captivated by John’s talent and introduced him to Chris Saxton of the Arika Label. This connection led to the recording of one of Lorna’s original songs for John’s album, further cementing his growing reputation. | | A few years later, while living in Katoomba, New South Wales, Lorna and Noel invited John to their home to share a new song Lorna had written about the beauty and romance of the Blue Mountains region — “Love in Katoomba.” Together, they refined the song before recording John’s vocals in a Sydney studio. | | The track was later mixed and mastered in Wentworth Falls, and John sold the resulting cassettes at his live shows, delighting audiences wherever he performed. | | Sadly, John McCall passed away a few years later, leaving behind cherished memories and timeless music that continues to touch hearts. |
