Pandora inks performance royalty deals with trade groups ASCAP and BMI

Pandora inks performance royalty deals with trade groups ASCAP and BMI

Pandora (P +0.8%) has struck multi-year licensing deals with ASCAP and BMI, two trade groups that own music publishing rights to 20M+ songs between them. In tandem with the deals, Pandora is withdrawing its appeal of an adverse May ruling from a New York rate court regarding a dispute with BMI.

Terms are undisclosed, though Pandora says the deals "allow both ASCAP and BMI to further their goal of delivering improved performance royalties for their songwriters and publishers," while allowing Pandora to benefit from greater rate certainty and product flexibility.

As of earlier this year, Pandora paid 1.85% of its revenue to ASCAP and 1.75% to BMI. The company recently bought a South Dakota radio station in an attempt to lower its performance royalty payments.
The agreements follow direct deals with music publishers Warner/Chappell and Sony/ATV. They're separate from Pandora's recording royalty payments to SoundExchange (much larger), the 2016-2020 rates for which were set last week by the Copyright Royalty Board in a much-anticipated ruling.

Tod Hughes

Tod Hughes Quotes and Reviews

Bandblurb

“Hughes clearly establishes himself as an important new talent.”

Skope Magazine

“they certainly serve notice of Tod Hughes’ songwriting skills”

Penweb

“We need more simple albums. On his debut EP Changin’ Gears, Tod Hughes dispenses with eardrum busting production, elaborate song structures, and strident theatricality. He presents listeners with six straightforward songs written about subjects drawn from everyday life and musically tailored along similar lines. The Canadian based singer/songwriter’s gifts are real. He has discernment enough to pull back on the reins enough to entertain audiences instead of letting his self-indulgence fly, but he has a talent for twisting and uncovering illuminating turns of phrase. “

Vents Magazine

“There is a higher intelligence presiding over these songs, but it informs the artistry; it’s the hand behind the curtain. “

‘there’s a refreshing amount of humor throughout the album”

All What’s Rock

“The Only Person Who Won’t Drink with Me Is You” is an ideal closer – its high velocity charge and romping humor are the fullest realization of Hughes’ musical vision. The guitars deliver a nasty bite that helps put the song over more.”

Tod Hughes BIO

Tod Hughes hails from Calgary, Canada where he lives with his family.  Tod writes real music that comes from the heart, stories of love, hurt, happiness, fear, disappointment and fun.  A message of hope is thread through the stories which are sometimes serious and sometimes a bit tongue in cheek.  The toe tapping melodies and memorable choruses will stick in your mind for days after hearing them.  They are told with truth and respect.

Tod wrote and sang all of the songs on "Changing Gears".  One song on the album, “Brad’s Song” went to number 2 on radio charts in Louisiana, and the album charted throughout the US, as well as being picked up for TV by the Discovery Channel,  NASCAR Station and others.

Inspired by the great storytellers of our time, men like Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, JJ Cale, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen, Tod's unique style of telling the stories and engaging the listener resonates with folks of all ages

Patricia Blair

Actress Patricia Blair was born in Fort Worth, Texas but grew up in Dallas. She first entered the world of entertainment as a young teenage model, eventually represented by the Conover Agency.
She apprenticed in summer stock before Warner Bros. discovered her for films after catching some alluring cheesecake shots of her. The highly photogenic lady did the starlet route starting out with the stage moniker of "Patricia Blake".
She appeared as a second female lead in such standard filming as Jump Into Hell (1955), Crime Against Joe(1956), The Black Sleep (1956), which reunited horror icons Bela LugosiLon Chaney Jr.,Basil Rathbone and John Carradine and the suspenser City of Fear (1959) opposite Vince Edwards, but not much came out of this promise.
True to form, she later did a TV pilot entitled "Tramp Ship" opposite Neville Brand but it did not sell. Better things started happening in the early 1960s. She came in for a season in a semi-regular role on The Rifleman (1958) replacing actress Joan Taylor as a spunky love interest for Chuck Connors
In 1964, she was just about to relocate to New York when screenwriter Gordon Chase submitted her name for the female lead in the series Daniel Boone (1964) as "Rebecca Boone", the wife of Fess Parker's legendary outdoorsman.
She won the part and stayed with the show for six profitable seasons. She also made numerous late 50s and 60s TV appearances with such guest credits on The Bob Cummings Show (1955), The Virginian(1962), Perry Mason (1957) and Bonanza (1959), among others.
Little heard of following the demise of the Daniel Boone (1964) TV series in 1970, she appeared in a few minor films and TV spots before dropping completely out of sight. In later years, she produced trade shows in New York and New Jersey.

This Day in History September 5th

The First Labor Day

On September 5, 1882, some 10,000 workers assembled in New York City to participate in America's first Labor Day parade. After marching from City Hall, past reviewing stands in Union Square, and then uptown to 42nd Street, the workers and their families gathered in Wendel's Elm Park for a picnic, concert, and speeches. This first Labor Day celebration was eagerly organized and executed by New York’s Central Labor Union, an umbrella group made up of representatives from many local unions.  Debate continues to this day as to who originated the idea of a workers' holiday, but it definitely emerged from the ranks of organized labor at a time when they wanted to demonstrate the strength of their burgeoning movement and inspire improvements in their working conditions.

New York's Labor Day celebrations inspired similar events across the country. Oregon became the first state to grant legal status to the holiday in 1887; other states soon followed. In 1894, Congress passed legislation making Labor Day a national holiday.
For many decades, Labor Day was viewed by workers not only as a means to celebrate their accomplishments, but also as a day to air their grievances and discuss strategies for securing better working conditions and salaries. Nowadays, Labor Day is associated less with union activities and protest marches and more with leisure. For many, the holiday is a time for family picnics, sporting events, and summer's last hurrah.

  • For images and documents pertaining to labor unions, search across the American Memory collections on the term labor union.
  • American Memory contains an extensive array of materials related to  parades and processions. Search the collections of photographs and prints using the keyword parades, or the name of a specific parade.  The collections of motion pictures also document many different kinds of parades including a small Massachusetts town’s celebration of Labor Day.

The Outlaw Jesse James

The infamous Jesse James was born on September 5, 1847. At seventeen, James left his nativeMissouri to fight as a Confederate guerilla in the Civil War. After the war, he returned to his home state and led one of history's most notorious outlaw gangs. With his older brother Frank and several other ex-Confederates, including Cole Younger and his brothers, the James gang robbed their way across the Western frontier targeting banks, trainsstagecoaches, and stores from Iowa to Texas. Eluding even thePinkerton National Detective Agency, the gang escaped with thousands of dollars.
Despite their criminal and, often, violent acts, James and his partners were much adored. Journalists, eager to entertain Easterners with tales of the Wild West, exaggerated and romanticized the gang's heists, often casting James as a contemporary Robin Hood. While James did harass railroad executives who unjustly seized private land for the railways, modern biographers note that he did so for personal gain—his humanitarian acts were more fiction than fact.
Jesse James' outlaw days ended abruptly in 1882 when fellow gang member Robert Ford fired a bullet into the back of his head. Ford hoped to claim the $10,000 offered for James' capture but received only a fraction of the reward. He did, however, secure himself a place in Western outlaw lore that lives on in literature, song, and film.
