'JAGGED LITTLE PILL' by ALANIS MORISSETTE

Pop Flash
facebook
Our thoughts on all the best pop genre albums of the last decade are coming later this week, but for now, Uproxx’s main list is peppered with all the important releases that defined the last ten years. For instance, the third-best album of this time period? Taylor Swift’s masterpiece, Red, released in 2012:

Ask almost any Swiftie in the world what the best Taylor album is and the response will be… swift. Red is the fan-favorite pinnacle, the album that has everything; we were in a state of grace back then, even if we knew trouble was about to walk in. The last few albums of Taylor’s career have cemented her role as a pop star, and brought the drama, danger, and wisdom that success on that level necessarily entails. But darling, we’ll always have the scarf in “All Too Well,” we’ll always revere “Holy Ground,” we’ll always be “22” — and we’ll always know what color loving him was.

-- Caitlin White, UPROXX Pop Critic on Taylor Swift’s Red at No. 3 on our Best Albums Of The 2010s list.
NUMBER ONE STUNNERS
LIZZO
“Truth Hurts” is entering its sixth week at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, and bringing up another huge Lizzo track in its wake. This week, “Good As Hell” cracked the top 40 after hovering at No. 43, landed at No. 30, and is probably going to come for that No. 1 spot eventually, too. Oh did I mention that “Truth Hurts” has now doubled the record for longest-running No. 1 solo rap song by a woman? Lizzo did that.
BUBBLING UNDER
CAROLINE POLACHEK
Fans of early 2000s indie darlings Chairlift are more than familiar with Caroline Polachek’s stunning voice, but even they might not be prepared for the inventive, often-hilarious, always tender orchestral pop that she’s creating on her own. Her first full-length release since breaking up the band, Pang, comes out later this month, and if singles like "So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings" are any indication, the playfulness and power of this release will make it her best yet.
REMEMBER WHEN
'JAGGED LITTLE PILL'
by ALANIS MORISSETTE
Let it be known that on October 7, 1995, Alanis Morrissette’s iconic album Jagged Little Pill went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, which went on to become the best-selling album by a female artist. Ever. The album had six hit singles and cemented Alanis as a legend among indie and pop fans alike. Now that’s ironic.
LOVE LETTERS
RUSTON KELLY
There are covers, and then there’s Ruston Kelly delivering an absolute smash rendition of Taylor Swift’s beloved cult classic, “All Too Well.” I had the honor of seeing him perform this cover live at the Troubadour a couple weeks ago, and I wasn’t the only one with tears streaming down my face by the end. Do yourself a favor and go listen to his bluesy, gutsy, vocoder version here, and keep an ear out for everything else he’s doing — Ruston is a songwriting legend in the making. Mark my words.

George Nooks

FATdrop digital music services promo
promo packshot
Artist: George Nooks
Title: You're All I Need
Genre: Reggae
Label: Total Records

Nooks started his musical career in the youth choir at his church, but his first recording professionally in 1974, he found success performing under the name Prince Mohamed, as a deejay on disco mix tracks for producer Joe Gibbs, notably on Dennis Brown's 1978 hit "Money in my Pocket", and "How Could I Leave", as well as "Light Up Your Spliff" for producer Prince Tony Robinson.

He moved on to work with other producers such as Alvin Ranglin and Bunny Riley. His first album, a joint effort with General Echo, People Are You Ready, was released on the United Artists subsidiary Ballistic in 1978. This was followed by African Roots, recorded the following year for producer Linval Thompson.

He had a hit in Jamaica with "Forty Legs Dread", and the increasing violence in Kingston prompted Nooks to record a version of Little Roy's "Tribal War", now singing rather than deejaying, and released under his real name, which he followed with a cover version of Errol Dunkley's "Darling Ooh".

Nooks would subsequently concentrate on his singing, releasing the Today album in 1981, although he reverted to Prince Mohamed in 1982 for an album with June Lodge. His singing gained comparisons with Dennis Brown, who he would later pay tribute to with a double album of Brown covers.
